Considering that the positive effects of treatment are minimal and it does not prevent myopia from progressing, it seems that atropine drops are a waste of time and can have potentially serious complications. Also, there is an ethical question mark about putting drugs into the eyes of children who are otherwise healthy.

Back to nature

To prevent myopia, we need to modify the visual environment in which children live. We know that myopia is not genetic. Children who grow up in places where there are a lot of outdoor activities generally have better eyesight. However, in countries in East Asia, where children spend many hours every day doing extensive schoolwork, the incidence of myopia among teenagers is up to 75%. In Sweden, a study found 49.7% of 12- and 13-year-old children were near-sighted (Villarreal et al., 2000).
